RV Pet Safety | How we keep it safe

Written by Jim & Korin

Welcome to our website and thanks for listening to our story. Join us on our journey as we venture into retirement and living full time in our RV traveling the country. We'll tell you how, what and why we are doing this and how you can too.

Like the majority of RVers we travel with our pets and their safety is always paramount. We did a video a while back which you can find at the bottom of this post. Since that video was made we added a couple of new items to protect our dogs in the summer heat and we have 4 lines of defense to monitor conditions in our RV.

A Power Outage Is Your Worst Enemy In The Summer.

This summer we experience a power loss to our RV and of course that led to no air conditioning. Fortunately, we have a La Crosse weather station that is connected to WiFi that can send us alerts if the temperature rises above or below a predetermined level that you can set. What happened was that someone in the campground hit the transformer and caused an outage for our whole row.

What we didn’t have set was our Auto Generator Start in case of a power outage. That was a lesson-learned for us and something that will be added to our checklist going forward. If you don’t have the ability to start your generator you may want to leave a key with someone in the campground who can gain access to your RV. In addition we have a sign in the front window with our emergency contact phone numbers.

Wireless/Remote Air-conditioning Control

Recently we were having troubles with our Thermostat and found an amazing replacement. It’s called Easy Touch, and they have plug in replacements for just about any type of Thermostat. It can handle up to 4 different AC units separately. They are made by Micro-Air and on their website they have an easy to use guide that will help you identify which model replaces your current thermostat.

There are many great features to this thermostat, you can control it via bluetooth or WiFi from phone smartphone. You can also set alerts to notify you when the temperature goes above or below a setting you enter. There is also a schedule feature that we find useful for different times of the day when the sun moves around our coach and it develops hotspots.

Visually See What’s Going On In Your RV

The as we mentioned in our video we can visually monitor our RV with Blink Cameras that we have placed through-out the RV. Not only can we see our dogs but we have the ability to talk to them too. In addition the blink camera have the ability to send you temperature alerts and have motion sensing to alert you to activity in the RV.

While we may have a bit of overkill, it wasn’t planned that way, each of the products we use were bought for other primary uses but ended up providing redundancy alerts to monitor the temperature in our RV.

Let us know if you have any comments and additional tips.

In this video we discuss how we travel in our RV with our 4 dachshunds and keep them safe while on the road. What do we do on travel days? How do we make sure they stay safe (and quiet) when we venture away from the RV
